Is One Piece too long to start? It is long, but it is not as bad as the number makes it sound. The anime lists 1,180 episodes and the manga has reached 115 volumes, yet the first stretch you need to find out whether it is for you is only 53 episodes. You have probably had the same thought as everyone else: "I will never catch up, so why begin?" That worry is the reason most people never press play. We are fans who want you to get to the good part, so this guide gives you the real numbers, what you can skip, and a plan that is easy to stick to. It is spoiler-free.

The short version

  • It is genuinely long. The anime lists 1,180 episodes across 22 seasons, and the manga stands at 115 volumes, both as of late October 2026.
  • Very little of it is filler. One filler tracker counts 98 filler episodes, which is under a tenth of the show.
  • You do not commit to 1,180 episodes. Try the first 53 episodes, then decide.
  • Prefer reading? The manga is a real alternative, and it is the same story from the start.

How long is One Piece, really?

One Piece is very long: the anime lists 1,180 episodes across 22 seasons, and the manga has 115 volumes.

The manga began in Weekly Shonen Jump on 22 July 1997, and the anime started airing in October 1999. Both are still going. The Egghead arc ran as season 21, episodes 1,089 to 1,155, from January 2024 to December 2025, and the Elbaph arc started on 5 April 2026 as season 22. Wikipedia lists the anime's episode count as of this week, so the figure above will keep growing.

Why does that matter to you? Because the length is a reason to pace yourself, not a reason to skip it. A story that has run for more than 25 years has had time to build payoffs that a short series cannot, and you only meet them if you start.

Is One Piece full of filler?

No. Filler is a small part of One Piece, and most of it sits in clearly labelled stretches you can skip.

Anime Filler Guide, a dedicated tracker, counts 98 filler episodes out of the 1,180, which is under a tenth. Some of those are in the first season: episodes 54 and 56 to 60 in the Warship Island arc are filler. Bigger blocks later include episodes 131 to 143 and 326 to 336. Trackers disagree by a few episodes, so treat any list as a guide, not gospel. We keep a full breakdown in our One Piece filler guide.

So the honest version of the length problem is this: you will not be sitting through hundreds of pointless episodes. You will be sitting through a lot of the real story, and that is a different problem.

Where should you start One Piece?

Start at the beginning, with episode 1. One Piece does not have a good "jump in later" point, because the crew, the running jokes and the reasons people care are all built from the East Blue arcs onward.

The first season, East Blue, covers episodes 1 to 61. Here is how it breaks down, so you can see it is a set of short adventures rather than one endless wall:

Arc Episodes
Romance Dawn 1 to 4
Orange Town 5 to 8
Syrup Village 9 to 18
Baratie 19 to 30
Arlong Park 31 to 45
Buggy's Adventure 46 to 47
Loguetown 48 to 53
Warship Island 54 to 61 (54 and 56 to 60 are filler)

Our suggestion is to treat Loguetown, episode 53, as your first checkpoint. By then you have met the core crew and seen how the show works, which is plenty to know whether you want more.

A plan to start without burning out

The easiest way to avoid burnout is to make the commitment small and give yourself permission to stop. Try this:

  1. Watch episodes 1 to 4 (Romance Dawn). That is four episodes. If you are not curious by the end, that is a fair answer.
  2. Keep going to the end of Baratie, episode 30. This is a good stretch to decide whether the humour and the crew work for you.
  3. Finish Arlong Park, episode 45, then Loguetown, episode 53. This is your checkpoint. Ask whether you want to keep going, not whether you can finish.
  4. Skip the filler as you reach it. Use a filler list so you do not have to guess.
  5. Pace it to your week. One or two episodes a night is easier to keep up than a weekend binge that leaves you tired of it.

Why does this work? Because "I have to watch 1,180 episodes" is a wall, and "I am watching the next arc" is a Tuesday night. Most people who stall on One Piece never gave themselves a small first goal.

Should you read the manga instead?

You can, and for some people the manga is the better way in. It is the same story, written by the creator, Eiichiro Oda, and it has no filler at all.

The catch is that 115 volumes is also a lot, and reading is slower for many people than watching. A sensible split is to watch the anime to build your love for the crew, and move to the manga only if you want to read ahead of the anime. If you do read ahead, watch out for spoilers online, because the manga is further along than the anime. For a look at the best stretches once you are in, see our ranking of the best One Piece arcs.

Common questions

How many One Piece episodes are there?

The anime lists 1,180 episodes across 22 seasons as of late October 2026. It is still airing, so the number keeps rising.

How many One Piece episodes can you skip?

About 98 are filler according to one dedicated tracker, which is under a tenth of the show. Different trackers vary by a few episodes, so check a current list.

Can you skip the early episodes and start with a newer arc?

We do not recommend it. The newer arcs lean on characters and jokes set up early on, so you would get less out of them.

Is the One Piece manga shorter than the anime?

Not in a way that helps much. The manga has 115 volumes and has no filler, but it is further ahead than the anime, so you finish sooner only if you read faster than you watch.

What to do next

If you remember one thing, make it this: you are not signing up for 1,180 episodes, you are signing up for the first four. Press play on Romance Dawn tonight, and let the show earn the next arc. If you want something to keep you company while you watch, our One Piece collection has the straw hat, the crew and the ship, and the One Piece filler guide will tell you which episodes you can skip along the way. Sources for the episode and volume counts are the One Piece anime article on Wikipedia and the Anime Filler Guide One Piece list.
