Light spoilers ahead: we describe the set-up of each arc and its biggest moments without giving away every twist.

One Piece has been sailing since 1999, and the anime is now past episode 1,150. That's a lot of ocean. If you've ever wondered which stretches are the reason people stick with it for years, this list is for you.

The quick answer: Enies Lobby is the best One Piece arc, closely followed by Marineford and Wano Country. All three deliver huge stakes, unforgettable crew moments and some of the most emotional scenes in anime.

We've ranked these arcs on story, character moments, fights and how well they've held up on a rewatch. Episode numbers come from the One Piece Wiki's story arc list, so you can find each arc fast.

How we ranked them

  • Emotional payoff: does the arc land a moment you'll never forget?
  • Stakes and villain: is the threat real, and is the villain memorable?
  • Crew focus: does it give a Straw Hat a defining moment?
  • Rewatch value: does it still hold up today?

10. Egghead (episodes 1086-1155)

The Straw Hats land on a futuristic island run by Dr Vegapunk, the world's greatest scientist, and things escalate fast.

Egghead opens the Final Saga and changes how you see the whole world of One Piece. It finally reveals the full story of Bartholomew Kuma, one of the most heartbreaking backstories in the series, and brings the World Government's highest powers into the open. It's at ten only because it's so recent; give it time to settle and it could climb.

9. Impel Down (episodes 422-425, 430-452)

Luffy breaks into the world's most secure prison to save his brother Ace. That's the whole pitch, and it's brilliant.

Impel Down is a jailbreak story packed with old enemies turned allies, including Buggy, Mr. 3 and Crocodile, plus newcomers such as Emporio Ivankov. Warden Magellan and his poison make the stakes feel real, and the arc leads directly into Marineford.

8. Whole Cake Island (episodes 783-877)

Sanji has been taken to marry into the family of Big Mom, one of the Four Emperors, and the crew has to get him back.

Whole Cake Island is Sanji's story, from his painful childhood with the Vinsmoke family to the moment the crew refuses to let him go. It also gives us Luffy vs Katakuri, a fight where Luffy learns to see the future with Observation Haki. It's a little long, but its highs are some of the highest in the series.

7. Dressrosa (episodes 629-746)

Dressrosa is a colosseum tournament, a revolution and a war against Donquixote Doflamingo all at once.

It's packed: Luffy debuts Gear Fourth, Sabo returns, and Trafalgar Law's tragic history with Doflamingo finally comes out. Dressrosa is the longest pre-Wano arc, and some fans find the middle slow. Push through and you get one of the series' best final battles.

6. Alabasta (episodes 92-130)

The first great One Piece arc. Princess Vivi needs to stop a civil war in her desert kingdom, engineered by Crocodile and his secret organisation, Baroque Works.

Alabasta proved One Piece could do politics, loss and big fights in the same story. Luffy's three rounds against Crocodile, and the farewell to Vivi, are still among the most iconic moments in the series.

5. Water 7 (episodes 229-263)

Water 7 is where One Piece breaks your heart.

The crew arrives in a city of shipwrights to repair the Going Merry, only to learn she can't be saved. Usopp and Luffy fight over the ship, Usopp leaves the crew, and Robin disappears with CP9. It's a quieter arc than most on this list, but it sets up the greatest payoff in the series.

4. Arlong Park (episodes 31-44)

The arc that turned One Piece into a phenomenon. Nami has been secretly working for the fish-man pirate Arlong for years to buy back her village.

Arlong Park is when you realise One Piece isn't just a goofy adventure. Nami's backstory with Bell-mère and the moment Luffy puts his hat on her head are where many fans first fell in love with the series. If you only watch one East Blue arc, make it this one.

3. Wano Country (episodes 890-1085)

The longest arc in the anime and, for many, the most spectacular.

The Straw Hats join samurai and rebels to overthrow Kaido, the strongest creature in the world, and the shogun Orochi. Wano delivers the clash of the Worst Generation against two Emperors, the full Kozuki Oden flashback, and the debut of Gear 5 in episode 1071, when Luffy awakens his Devil Fruit's true power. Toei's animation for Wano's final act is some of the best One Piece has ever looked.

2. Marineford (episodes 457-489)

The Summit War. Whitebeard's pirates against the Navy's full might, with Ace's execution as the trigger.

Marineford is pure scale: dozens of the most powerful characters in the world on one battlefield, with Luffy pushing his body far past its limits to save his brother. The ending is one of the most devastating in anime, and it reshapes Luffy, the crew and the whole story going forward.

1. Enies Lobby (episodes 264-290, 293-302, 304-312)

The crew declares war on the World Government to rescue one friend. That's Enies Lobby.

After Water 7, Robin has handed herself over to CP9 to protect the crew. The Straw Hats storm a government stronghold, face CP9 one by one, and in one of the most famous scenes in anime, burn the World Government flag to show they mean it. Robin's reply to Luffy from across the courtyard is still the series' most emotional moment for many fans.

Enies Lobby has everything: every Straw Hat gets a fight, Usopp shines as Sogeking, Franky joins the crew, and the Going Merry gets her goodbye. It's the best One Piece arc.
